It's safe to say that the Ed Cooley era at Georgetown hasn't gotten off to a good start. In his two seasons at Georgetown after leaving Providence, Cooley has a record of 27-39. Georgetown did take a step forward last season, though. They had an 18-16 record overall with an 8-12 record in the Big East, which was 7th in the conference.
Projected lineup:
G Malik Mack
G KJ Lewis (Arizona transfer)
G Langston Lewis (Baylor transfer)
F Caleb Williams
C Vincent Iwuchukwu (St John's transfer)
If there's one reason to be high on this Georgetown team for next year, it's their backcourt group. They return last season's starting point guard in Malik Mack. Two seasons ago, when he was at Harvard, Mack won freshman of the year in the Ivy League conference. Last season, he was Georgetown's third leading scorer averaging 12.9 points while also leading the team with 4.3 assists. Georgetown also added three guards via the transfer portal, all transferring in from power conference programs. Langston Love transfers in from Baylor, which is where he has been for the last four seasons. Last year, he averaged 8.9 points in a good Baylor offense. They also bring in KJ Lewis, who was the sixth man on a very good Arizona team last season, averaging 10.8 points and 4.3 rebounds. Jeremiah Williams is another guard they got out of the portal from Rutgers. He was a solid player there last season, starting in 26 of 31 games and averaging 7 points and 2.9 boards.
The big concern for Georgetown next season is whether they added enough talent to the frontcourt. They return Caleb Williams, who was in their rotation last year. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 4.3 points and 3.8 rebounds during his freshman season. In the portal, they landed 7-foot-1 center Vincent Iwuchukwu from St John's, a former five-star recruit who has yet to find much success at the college level. Last year, he averaged 2.7 points in just 7 minutes a game on a stacked St John's team. This season, he transfers within the conference, hoping for a bigger role. Georgetown also landed a commitment from UConn transfer Isaiah Abraham. A four-star prospect in the 2024 class, the 6-foot-7 forward played in just 9 games there last year, averaging 1.6 points per game.
Can Ed Cooley find success in year three? The backcourt is definitely legit; they've got experienced players who can shoot and get to the rim. The frontcourt is a huge question mark, though. They'll need a breakout season from Vincent Iwuchukwu, but even if that occurs, there's still not much depth at the forward position. Georgetown will have to be one of the best shooting teams in the conference in order to compete this year.
Prediction: 8th in Big East
