For the first time in 23 seasons, Florida State will have a different head coach. Leonard Hamilton, the program's all-time winningest head coach, announced his retirement following last season. 35-year-old Luke Loucks is the replacement. He spent last season in the NBA as an assistant for the Sacramento Kings. FSU lost basically their entire rotation from last season, Jamir Watkins is by far the biggest loss, he was first-team all-conference last season and was the 43rd pick in the NBA draft. Malique Ewin is another big loss, he was one of the best bigs in the ACC last year and will now play for Arkansas this season.
Projected Lineup:
G Robert McCray (Jacksonville transfer)
G Kobe Magee (Drexel transfer)
F Lajae Jones (St Bonaventure transfer)
F Chauncey Wiggins (Clemson transfer)
F Alex Steen (Florida Southern transfer)
Head coach Luke Loucks will be relying entirely on transfers this upcoming season, but it does seem he was able to bring in some talent through the portal, especially in the backcourt. Jacksonville transfer Robert McCray will be a huge part of FSU's offense next season. He's been one of the best players in the ASUN conference in each of the last two seasons before transferring. Kobe Magee will play alongside him in the backcourt. He's been at Drexel the previous three seasons, and really broke out last year averaging 14 points per game. Another transfer guard they brought in from UMass-Lowell is Martin Somerville. He was the freshman of the year in the America East conference.
It will be an inexperienced frontcourt for the Seminoles next season. They did bring in Florida Southern transfer Alex Steen, who was one of the most heavily recruited transfers from the D2 level. Chauncey Wiggins is perhaps the only proven forward that FSU will have next season. He started in 26 games last season for a very good Clemson team. Four-star international recruit Egor Ryzhov comes in from Russia. He stands at 6 feet 11 and is already 21 years of age, he could definitely be a big part of their rotation next year. There are a lot of question marks surrounding FSU's roster next year. It will be interesting to see how first-year head coach Luke Loucks does with an entirely new team, but I definitely think it could be a long season for Seminole fans in the first season of the new era of Florida State basketball.
Prediction: 17th in ACC
